Wellington Park

Welcome to the Wellington Park online! Citizens for Wellington Park is an informal citizens organization dedicated to the betterment of Wellington Park, a small neighborhood park / playground (1.9 acres) on Kilburn Road in West Newton, Massachusetts (02465). The park is within a block bounded by Kilburn Rd, Southgate Park, Princess Road, Lindbergh Ave, and Henshaw Place. We believe that our little park can be a focal point for building a spirit of community and cooperation in our neighborhood. In cooperation with the City of Newton, our main improvement focus currently is a new play structure for the park. On this site you will find maps, play equipment proposals, newsletters, meeting reports, and lots of more. While this site serves as our virtual bulletin board, we maintain a real bulletin board at the park as well for those not wired. Our organization is sponsored by the Newton Community Service Center.
The organization was started by Ronda Andrews in the Spring of 1999 as a result of a perceived neglect of Wellington Park over the years. The founding of the organization was precipitated by the removal of a damaged slide that had been present for many years in the park, with no assurance that it would be replaced. [View Ronda's original letter to the City] Ronda, with help from her husband Bob (and moral support of their dog Augie), organized two community meetings, one at the park and one at the Newton Community Service Center. She developed a survey form in order to solicit citizen input as to the priority of improvements at Wellingtion Park. This was distributed to interested parties and the results were compiled and provided to our local aldermen and to the Parks and Recreation Department. A copy of the results were posted on the park bulletin board and are currently on our website [Survey].
With the help of local aldermen, especially Anthony Salvucci, some immediate improvements were implemented. A budget of $12,500 was allocated for this year earmarked for improvements. The Parks and Recreation Department has solicited our input on exactly how this amount should be spent and meetings and phone conversations with them have resulted. In addition, a capital improvement project (CIP request) of $60,000 was submitted by our three local aldermen (Anthony Salvucci, Richard Bullwinkle, Leonard Gentile) for the 2001 city budget for the reconstruction of the basketball and tennis courts.
Ronda Andrews relocated to Framingham, MA in July 1999 and turned over the records of Citizens for Wellington Park to Ted Kuklinski, who along with Ann Dorfman, has be coordinating the efforts of the group.
